Huge Sports weekend for me this weekend. Although I do not have the luxury of playing in a Beirut Tourney (hope it was good) I do have a jam-packed weekend. Actually, there are only really three things going on, USC’s first game, Fantasy Football draft, and WIS recruiting begins. Since this is being written after the ‘SC game, I will give you a few thoughts, just a few, and not some mundane game recap, because I know that bores the sh*t out of you. I hope everyone had a safe Labor Day. I for one, do not get the Monday off.
USC Game: If you didn’t know (I’m not sure that is possible), the Trojans won 63-17, covering the 35 point spread. Quick takes on the aftermath, of which I was unable to see, but did get to listen to the Radio broadcast, and of course watch the little helmets, which I love. The biggest question was the secondary, which on paper probably yielded more yards than expected, however my opinion is that this is the game plan of Pete Carroll’s Defense; keep everything in front of you, don’t give up “the big play”, stop the run, bend but don’t break, and of course, force turnovers. I think ‘SC did all of those things well on Saturday, so I have no questions about the D. I would like to see a bigger step up on 3rd down, but other than that, we were fine. At least 4 true freshman saw action on Saturday including Brian Cushing (forced kick-off fumble that Desmond Reed returned for a TD), Kyle Moore (fumble recovery), Patrick Turner (I think) and Kevin Ellison. I think that we will see more Bush touches this year, than last. I think it is a goal of the OC to get Reggie the ball as often as possible, even at the sacrifice of White.
L.C. Boyz Fantasy Football draft is on Monday. Has to be hands down one of my 7 favorite days of the year. Even though I am unable to attend for the second straight year, it is still blast. I can’t help but giggle through the whole thing. On Sunday, after listening to the ‘SC game, I went through an entire 19 round mock draft. It was PAINFUL to mock the last 10 rounds for people. I needed to, to see what I am getting or aiming for in late late rounds. I will say this, Boner had by far the worst team on paper (sorry Boner but your team is going to suck). Last year, the draft was on a Sunday (my time) so I was able to drink a few beers during it. I had to be up at like 5 am to set up, and the lame asses in L.A. were playing patty-cake for so long, we didn’t start for like 3 hours later. I was however drinking heavily by 7am, so that was great. Unfortunately, due to schedule conflicts, we are having it on a Monday (Tuesday SH time) so I can’t be drunk at 5 am. Which is a shame in and of itself.
What If Sports Recruiting. Simultaneous to my Football Draft, the recruiting season for WIS starts. Having had a terrible recruiting class last year, in addition to losing my 2 best players, this is the most crucial recruiting class Washburn University has ever had. However, I was in a similar position with my Cal-Tech team, and I recruited a stellar squad that ended up winning 30+ games last year (after I had moved on). However, every significant player on that squad, was one that I recruited. So I am confident I can build it again with the scholarships I have available. However, this time I want to stick it through, so I am expecting to be in “The 2” for at least 4 years.
I want to send a thanks to Mr. Mayne for sending along, arguably the greatest DVD ever compiled. It just arrived, so I will be watching that for the next couple of nights.
I also want to mention that Dell has to be one of the best endorsers of recommended products I have ever met. The last 3 or 4 things he has recommended to me have been off the charts. From Band of Brothers (Obviously) to the book “Blink” to Entourage and the most recent Crash, he has yet let to let me down. I know he has recommended I watch a few other things that I have not gotten around to, but if they are anything close to these four, then Dell, I will try your “Green Eggs and Ham” whatever that may be.
If you have a chance, please see “Crash”. It brings up some very interesting points about racism and stereo types, without doing much more (dialogue wise) than put in words what we typically are feeling (and saying sometimes). Paul Haggis did an excellent job, and the acting is very good. My only real question now is, what the hell is Don Cheadle’s problem? The last couple of movies of his I have watched have been awesome. Hotel Rwanda? Come on , this guy is has to be getting top dollar soon. And to think, he played Private Washburn in Hamburger Hill.
